What is an HGV licence?

HGV refers to heavy Goods vehicles, which means HGVs are the commercial vehicles that are used in the transportation of some goods of different materials as per the needs of the clients. HGV licence helps you in driving such large and rigid vehicles legally.  

HGV driving is somewhat different from driving other vehicles like cars etc. Because HGV are large vehicles which are to be operated with extra care. No doubt every type of drive g needs proper training and driving test but HGV driving needs more attention because these are large vehicles and should be operated with extra care to prevent the hazards and other aspects.

Types of HGV licences?

There are various types of HGV licences associated with HGV Driving. These licence types are based on the different types of vehicles associated in terms of vehicle, the load you are carrying, the weight of the load you are carrying, etc. Some of the licence types that are associated with HGV licence categories are:

  • HGV Category C+E licence

Requirements for being an HGV driver

To get an HGV licence:

  • You must first carry a provisional car licence
  • A person should be 18 years of age to get the HGV licence in place.
  • You need to go for the medical exam. The medical exam is kept to check if you are medically fit for the HGV driving licence.
  • Once you clear off the medical you must go for the HGV driver training. The training further includes HGV driving theory and the practical test which has two modules : the theory module and the hazard perception theory training module.
  • Once you are done with the theory training modules you need to go for the HGV driving test. The HGV driving test is similar to the training you get. You need to clear the HGV driving test as per the criteria to get the HGV licence.
  • Then you must go for a provisional CPC qualification that is the certificate of professional competence. This is necessary to get professionalism in terms of HGV driving. You are considered a legal and a professional driver only if you have cleared the CPC in the end.
  • You need to renew your licence when you are 45 years of age, then you need to renew your licence every 5 years till the age of 65 years.
  • After the age of 65 years, your renewal needs to be annual.
